How to Use Podcasts Effectively – in Three Steps

Before Listening

Read the title and description. Think about which words might come up. Write down questions that you want to find answers to while listening.

While Listening

Listen to the entire episode once – initially just to understand the topic and the most important information (global listening).

During the second listening, pay more attention to details. Use the pause button, rewind when necessary, and adjust the playback speed if needed.

You do not have to understand every single word. First, try to understand the main message and the most important information.

After Listening

Summarize the episode in a few sentences – either orally or in writing.

Also write down three new words or expressions that you want to remember. Even better: Create your own sentence with each new word.

At the same time, you practise listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Few exercises combine so many language skills at once.
